The Portage Theater is an integral part of Chicago’s history, and our goal is to ensure that this historic landmark remains a part of the city’s cultural landscape for generations to come.

 

Built in 1920, the Portage Theater has stood at the heart of Chicago’s Portage Park neighborhood for more than a century. Originally opened as a grand movie palace, it quickly became a gathering place where generations of Chicagoans came together to experience the magic of cinema and share memorable moments with family, friends, and neighbors.

 

Over the decades, the Portage has evolved alongside the city. Its story extends far beyond movies—from its early days as a neighborhood cinema to its later life as a venue for concerts, live performances, independent films, silent film screens, and community events. Each chapter has added to the theater’s legacy and created memories for the people who have walked through its doors. For more than 100 years, the Portage Theater has been more than a building. It has been a place for people to come together, experience art and entertainment, and create lasting memories.

 

Today, preserving the Portage means preserving those memories while creating the opportunity for fantastic new ones to be created. Our mission is to help protect, restore, and revitalize this historic theater so that future generations can experience the same sense of community, culture, and connection that has defined the Portage for more than a century. Additionally, the foundation will serve as a bridge between the Chicago community to help sustain and program events at the theater for the next 100 years.
